The song "Calm Down," a duet between American popstar Selena Gomez and Nigerian artist Rema, has won the Best Afrobeats prize at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The star-studded occasion, which took place on Tuesday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, was a celebration of extraordinary musical artists who have made a lasting impression on the world stage.
With three nominations—for Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, and Best Afrobeats—'Calm Down' had already attracted attention before this historic win.
But it was the Best Afrobeats category, where this incredible team made history by being the first winners of this brand-new VMAs category, that cemented their place in history.
In the Best Afrobeats category, songs like Burna Boy's "It's Plenty," Davido and Musa Key's "Unavailable," and others were among the finalists. 'Rush,' by Ayra Starr 'People,' by Libianca "2 Sugar," a song by Wizkid featuring Ayrra Starr, and "Bandana," by Fireboy DML.
'Calm Down's' initial release on August 25, 2022, received praise for its masterful fusion of Afrobeats and pop components.
The song's remix, on the other hand, became incredibly popular and set a singular record by remaining at the top of the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs list for a full year.
