These Soft Drinks Contain Aspartame — WHO Declared ‘Possibly Carcinogenic’
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), one of the most common artificial sweeteners, aspartame, is a possible carcinogen.
The announcement, which was made on Thursday, followed rumors of an imminent declaration.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), evaluated the impact of aspartame based on scientific data collected from a variety of sources, including peer-reviewed papers, government reports, and studies conducted for regulatory purposes.
In a separate evaluation, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization concluded that aspartame is safe to consume at the previously agreed-upon level of 40mg/kg of body weight.
Although aspartame is most commonly associated with Diet Coke, numerous popular beverages contain the sweetener.
What EXACTLY IS ASPARTAME?
Aspartame is an odorless white substance that was discovered in 1965 by American chemist James Schlatter.
It is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar, so very little is required to sweeten foods and beverages. Due to its low quantity requirement, it is used as a sugar replacement in soft beverages.
The ingredient is permitted in Nigeria as a nonnutritive sweetener with a permissible daily intake of 40 mg/kg of body weight.
The low-calorie sugar substitute is also permitted for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States, the Food Standards Agency of the United Kingdom, and numerous other nations.
Although aspartame has been used for decades, it has been the subject of several controversies. A 2017 review of studies, for instance, found evidence that those who routinely consume sweeteners, such as aspartame, may be at a higher risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
