The highly anticipated Soundcity MVP Awards hosted their fifth edition on Saturday, February 11th, 2023, with the likes of Burna Boy, Tems, and others winning awards.

The award event, which recognizes hard work in the African music industry, took place in the Eko Convention Center in Lagos State.

The award event, which recognizes hard work in the African music industry, took place in the Eko Convention Center in Lagos State.


This year’s edition comprised 15 award categories and was powered by Tingo.


South African actress Pearl Thusi anchored the event, which featured performances from African artistes, including Gyakie, Arya Starr, Bad Boy Timz, Seyi Vibez, Ruger, and Black Sherif.


One of the highlights from the performance included a tribute to fallen artists and their loved ones, including Sound Sultan, Ifeanyi Adeleke (Davido’s son), Rico Swavey, Obama DMW, and others.


Another highlight from the ceremony was a cameo appearance by Shanty Town main actors Chidi Mokeme, Ini Edo, and Mercy Eke, who impersonated their characters, Scar, Inem, and Jackie, and kept the audience laughing non-stop.


Out of the 15 categories, Nigerian musicians Asake, Fireboy DML, Ruger, and others won accolades in 12 separate categories.


African behemoth, Burna Boy, earned the African artist of the year award, thus showing why he is the African Giant.


Not surprising, Kizz Daniel’s Buga earned the "Song of the Year" award, while Rema secured the "Digital Artist of the Year."


Ruger received the Best New Artist title, and Oxlade also won the Listeners' Preference category with "Ku Lo Sa."


Asake became the new male MVP, while Tems secured the new female MVP, adding to her collection of triumphs in a year.


Fireboy won the best pop prize with his song "Peru." Pheelz and Buju won the "Best Collaboration" category with their song "Finesse," while Ajebo Hustlers also claimed the title of "Best Duo."


Akon won the title of "legend of the year," Black Sheriff got the award for "best hip-hop," and South African DJ Maphorisa took home the prize for "best African DJ."


Music producer Magixsticks received the Producer of the Year award, while video director TG Omori got the Video of the Year award for "Fireboy and Asake - Bandana."

This year's edition was powered by Tingo and featured 15 award categories.
