Wrapped, an annual compilation of the year's most popular artists, albums, songs, and playlists as streamed by Spotify users across the world, has been issued by the music streaming site Spotify.
Artists such as Burna Boy, Asake, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and other Nigerian performers dominated the music landscape and were even nominated for Grammy awards.
Nigerians listened to nearly three times as much local music in 2022 as they did in 2021, according to data from Spotify, which indicates a 291% increase in local music consumption year-over-year.
Spotify's Artist & Label Partnerships Manager, Victor Okpala, commented on the tremendous expansion of the Nigerian music business.
The year 2022 marked the beginning of a period of cultural acceleration, and we're eager for fans and musicians alike to give their thoughts on the music they created and listened to this year.
As the year comes to a close with the release of Wrapped 2022, the issue of who currently reigns atop the Naija music throne remains. As expected, Nigerian musicians dominate the list of the most streamed artists in the country, with Drake being the only foreign artist to crack the top 10.
Given that the musician has illuminated the world in 2022, it is not surprising that the African great is the most streamed artist in Nigeria. His studio album, Love Damini, helped propel him to the top of the charts in Nigeria, where he was the second-most streamed musician in 2017. "Last Last" by Burna Boy, which was nominated for a Grammy, was the most streamed song.
The YBNL singer dominated the music world in 2022 with "back-to-back hits," multiple guest appearances, and the release of two EPs. It is not surprising that five of the songs he collaborated on made the top 10 of the list of the top 50 Nigerian songs of 2022, as he remained a constant in the eyes of music enthusiasts.
In 2021, Ayra Starr continued where she left off. Last year, the Bloody Samaritan singer was the second most streamed female artist in Nigeria, and she appears to have stepped up her game in Nigeria and abroad this year. This year, she is the most streamed female musician in Nigeria. Rush and her collaboration with Magixx were among the top 50 Nigerian songs of 2022.
Tems Baby has maintained her prominence, particularly within the global music industry. She was nominated for a Grammy for her performance in "Wait for You" alongside Future and Drake. The song has been named the most exported Nigerian song of the year.
The list cannot be complete without Wizkid, the African Star Boy. Last year's release, "Made in Lagos," remains one of the most streamed albums in 2022. Bad to Me was also a popular tune among Spotify users. He has more than three songs on the list of the fifty most popular songs in Nigeria in 2022.
The 2022 edition appears to be cherished both uniquely and by fans. Users of Spotify will receive in-depth descriptions of their favorite artists, creators, and music. A new listening personality function assigns tracks to people based on their 2022 music listening tendencies.
In addition, fans will receive wrapped cards with remarks from their favorite musicians that may be shared on social media. Additionally, Roblox users can virtually travel to Spotify Island, where they can play games and win merchandise from a variety of artists.
