Xabi Alonso, a former player for Liverpool and Real Madrid, has been named Bayer Leverkusen's next coach, replacing Gerardo Seoane, who was fired by the Bundesliga club on Wednesday.
"Bayer and Gerardo Seoane depart from one another. The Werkself announced on Twitter that Xabi Alonso will be their new head coach. Alonso has won both the World Cup and the European Cup.
The Swiss coach was fired after Leverkusen lost to Porto 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Alonso won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships as a player for Spain. Additionally, he won the Champions League with both Liverpool and Madrid.
Alonso tied the game for Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan. This forced extra time, which Liverpool won on penalties.

He managed Real Sociedad's reserve squad in his native Basque region for three years until May, during which time they were promoted to Spain's second division for the first time in sixty years, but were demoted at the end of last season.
Seoane's departure from Leverkusen followed a spate of disappointing performances this season.
Leverkusen have had a terrible season, even though they led their team to the Champions League by finishing third last year.
They were ousted by third-tier SV Elversberg in the first round of the German Cup, and after eight games they are in second-last place in the Bundesliga.
On Sunday, Leverkusen's chief executive officer, Fernando Carro, demanded "rapid results" from Seoane, whose team was routed 4-0 by Bayern Munich on Friday.
Thomas Tuchel, Adi Huetter, and Domenico Tedesco, all of whom used to manage Chelsea, were said to be possible replacements for Seoane.
In 2017, Alonso finished his playing career at Bayern Munich, where he had won the Bundesliga in each of his three seasons.
Before he signed a one-year contract extension in Spain, he was likely to take over as coach at Borussia Moenchengladbach in March 2021.
On Saturday, Alonso will lead Leverkusen against Schalke for the first time in the Bundesliga.
