Breaking: King Charles officially appoints Rishi Sunak UK PM

On Tuesday, after accepting Liz Truss' resignation, King Charles III of the United Kingdom chose Rishi Sunak to be his second prime minister.

 

Rishi Sunak became Britain's third prime minister this year and the first person of color to head the former imperial power on Tuesday, promising to fix the country's ailing finances after Liz Truss lasted only 49 days in office.

 

After being appointed by King Charles III, Sunak spoke in front of 10 Downing Street. This was the most dramatic turn in British politics since Boris Johnson quit in July.

 

Truss wished Sunak "every success" as she left Downing Street and said she was "more convinced than ever" that Britain needs to be "brave" in the face of its challenges.

 

On Monday, Sunak beat Penny Mordaunt to become the new leader of the ruling Conservatives. 

Mordaunt lost because she didn't get enough nominations from Conservative MPs.

It became a two-way fight as Johnson abruptly abandoned a late-Sunday comeback attempt, failing to convince Sunak to share power. Since then, he has kept a deafening silence.

 

Hindu Sunak is the first British-Indian prime minister and, at 42 years of age, the youngest leader in more than two centuries.

 

US President Joe Biden called the choice "groundbreaking" and said he would get in touch with Sunak right away.

 

In a morning audience, Charles appointed Sunak as his first prime minister since taking the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
