ASUU dismisses varsities’ resumption order, says strike unshakeable
On Monday, during the seven-month strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities rejected resumption notices from university administration telling students to show up for lessons.
The group said that the fact that the facilities were closed showed that the strike was still working.
Dr. Chris Piwuna, former chairman of the ASUU's branch at the University of Jos, made these comments in an interview with The PUNCH.
Ralph Njoku, the public relations officer at Imo State University in Owerri, had said that the school had decided to opt out of the nationwide ASUU strike and asked its students and staff to return to class on Tuesday, September 20. His comments were in response to this news. He said that IMSU decided to end the strike to protect the interests of the faculty and students at the school.
"Yes. You can count on it being accurate. Please have your students return quickly. Classes will begin on Tuesday. Our priority is the welfare of the faculty and students. "We are ending the ASUU strike and encouraging students to return to class," he stated.
"I don't know why these individuals will never learn their lesson," he sighed. Are any university administrators affiliated with our union? Does he have permission to represent us as a whole? Before we took this step, did we talk to him or his VC (Vice Chancellor)? They're invading in an unstoppable fashion and can't be stopped.
Let's hear from the head honcho of this department. Please respect our pupils' and their parents' time by not wasting it.
Gombe State University, Yobe State University, Kaduna State University, and the rest all got the same treatment. There has been no change in the security level at those facilities. We will not be swayed in our strike.
Our members remain committed to our mission of liberating public universities from the neoliberal, neocolonialist grip.
